Last month we spent a week in San Diego and I was able to get out and bike for about 4 of the days. I rented from Top Jolt bike rentals in the Ocean Beach neighborhood which is in the back of the Himalaya boutique clothes shop. I can’t remember how much it was but it was very reasonable and I got a hybrid bike that was perfect for the flat routes around San Diego.
We stayed in Ocean beach which is a great place to be near the ocean and also in a great community with lots of bars and restaurants. I did quite a few miles and except for the trip to Point Loma, everything was flat and easy. The wind wasn’t bad and I don’t think it is normally that bad even though San Diego is on the ocean. It is a great place to ride and I would definitely think this is a place where bike commuting should be really big. The weather never seems to get to hot or cold, mostly flat and not much rain. The bike path network is OK but not nearly as complete as it should be. The routes that I was on were mostly filled with recreational riders and I didn’t see too many people using it just for transportation. I didn’t ride downtown but we drove their a couple of times and saw some good protected bike lanes that didn’t seem to be very busy. Next time I plan to ride more downtown and get out to Coronado. Here as some pics.
