I haven’t been blogging lately but that is mostly because I haven’t been riding. But I just spent 10 days in Belize and had a great time escaping from the Seattle cold and biking a bit. I hope to be riding and blogging a bit more from Beacon Hill soon but it will be a while before this cold and snow is gone.
The island is only about 5 miles long and is cut in half by “The Split”. In 1961, the island was separated by Hurricane Hattie which left a 50 yard cut which has never been connected with a bridge. The majority of the people and businesses are on the South part of the split.
There are about 2000-3000 people living on the island and almost all are involved in tourism even though there aren’t any big hotels or resorts. Just small hotels and a lot of airbnbs. None of the roads are paved all the transportation on the island is by golf carts and bicycles. The lack of hills or pavement make it perfect for fat tired single speed beach cruisers. Some of the “roads” were actually trails along the beach which were really only usable on foot or on a bike.
Our Airbnb rented bikes for $5 per day which we really enjoyed. You can see by my heat map that I rode on almost all the roads on the South part of the island during the week.
I really enjoyed bird watching on the 2 mile trail/road around the Southern part of the island. I saw several types of herons and egrets as well as the pelicans and frigate birds. We even saw a crocodile one day.
One day, we took a small ferry boat across the split and checked out the North side. Not much to see except for one resort with a restaurant. We had lunch and then they gave us a free ride back on their resort boat- including our bikes.
Great vacation and another trip where biking was a big part of our adventure. Looking forward to the next trip already as I look out of our Beacon Hill place at the piles of snow.
