The 3 Big things that stuck out for me about our 3 days in Hvar was the beautiful views from our room, the beautiful views from the fort, and the beautiful views on our boat ride. So lots of pics in this blog and I hope it doesn’t get TLDR (Too Long Didn’t Read). We are really in shoulder season right now so we have a pretty good choice of Airbnb’s because of the lack of tourists. In Hvar we had incredible views from our little deck at a place that cost around $50 per night.
People were explaining to us how crazy this place gets in the summer when all the boats are full and things get a little spring breaky like… It can be a real party town at times but we didn’t see it that much. Hotels and boats were not near full and even the main square looked empty at times.
Once in a while a tour group would come through and clog up the alleys with oblivious tourist who don’t realize that all paths go both ways and they need to get out our way when the tour guide starts talking… We have been mostly doing the Rick Steve’s walking tours that we downloaded to M’s phone in all the cities which has been working just fine for us.
Hvar has an old fort/castle on the top of the hill and our room was already half way up, so we toured that the first day after our first swim. Not really sure what the difference is between a fort and a castle but they called this one a fort. Not much too see up there besides a few old jail cells and a lot of beautiful views of town.
We have been doing really well at sticking to our budget but once in a while we need to do something a little different. They have been advertising day boat trips in our last couple of stops and we decided that Hvar was the best place to try one. We had heard and seen pics of the Blue Cave. The water around here is really clear so it can be really green or really blue depending on the weather or where you are. There are several caves in the limestone that the light only enters the cave via reflecting in underwater caves or through small holes in the limestone ceiling. It creates a really stunning effect of a bright blue water that doesn’t really come across well in photos but we of course tried. The tour stopped at several other caves, a secluded beach between some cliffs and some swimming lagoons. October is not the best time for swimming but I gave it a go. At the secluded beach, they won’t let boats near it… so I had to swim a long ways to get on the beach.
At our lunch stop, we took a little walk and I saw an octopus in the water. This is the first octopus I have ever seen in the wild.
Next stop is another Croatian small beach town- Korcula.
Wow, the blue cave looks really worthwhile!
Beautiful, enjoying your travelogue. Thanks!
Wow. Love your posts. Blue cave looks so cool. I saw an Octopus in Jamaica last December while snorkeling. It was so cool.
