We had planned 3 nights in Slovenia after leaving the capitol of Croatia- Zagreb. Unfortunately, we are now in offseason bus and train schedules and we couldn’t get a bus or train to our next destination on Wednesday, so we would have to leave Tuesday and only have 2 nights in Ljubljana Slovenia. Our Train to Slovenia was then delayed by a couple hours so we our first day was cut even shorter. Also, the weather forecast wasn’t looking very good… We got off the train and it was a downpour. We were worried that we wouldn’t be able to see what we want to see because of the time shortage, we are still trying to get over colds, and because we were soaked. We found our way to our airbnb and while “technically” the pics on the airbnb were correct, we had been a bit fooled. The place was really small and had a kids bed that was actually in the kitchen. Actually… it was the whole place except for a tiny bathroom. It was really small, without any place to sit besides the bed with a bunny, froggy and kitty bedspread.
The blog is usually filled with beautiful pics of really cool places but sometimes things aren’t always so beautiful when traveling. But we were not going to let late trains, sickness, rain or living in the kid’s section of IKEA, get in our way of seeing this town. We went out in the rain the first night and were able to get a seat at an awesome Bosnian restaurant with about 5 courses. Yes, I know we are in Slovenia but we haven’t had Bosnian food either and it is awesome. Sausages wrapped in Pita….mmmmm….. Sorry, no pics… my phone was too wet. But here is the photo of the castle walking home after dinner
The next morning is the rain slowed enough for us to get a proper walk around town, and up to the castle on the hill. The river was running well because of all the rain and we did enjoy seeing a town with not many tourists around.
We also found some good Slovenian food. Great dumplings and sausages which are also going to be in our “try to make” list when we get back some day.
We were also really enjoying the architecture of this town. One architect, Joze Plecnik, had done a lot of it… including the Triple Bridge which is really the center of town. It is hard to see from this pic but there are three bridges here.
Overall, we were really glad we were able to see this town and get a small glimpse into Slovenia. The town was super clean, reasonable prices, and people that were very friendly to us. This country has great hiking, mountains, and lots of caves that I would love to come back and see some time. I think we will be back sometime. Although this was not the ideal intro to Slovenia for us, I will leave you with a happy pic. Next stop- Rovinj, Croatia
