The last stop on our 2022 Mexico tour was 4 nights in the small beach town of Yelapa. We had been going full bore tourist mode during our few days in Mexico City so we wanted a few days to do nothing before we went home to Beacon Hill – Seattle. Yelapa does not have any roads that go to it, or in it, so the only way to get there is a 50 minute water taxi from Puerto Vallarta.
There are some roughly paved paths in town which are used for 4 wheel ATV’s or donkeys or horses. See these horses below blocking the path because they are carrying bricks for a new house. Sometimes you need patience to live in a small village on “Mexico time”.
There are a few tourist boats that come every day and drop off the Puerto Vallarta Resort people and the spring breakers for a few hours of drinking margaritas on the beach. But they were gone before dinner and it felt like we were a part of this little isolated village. There are a couple of small hotels and several airbnb’s but we felt like we kept seeing the same people at the restaurants every night. By the end of the stay, we had gone to most of the restaurants.
Our airbnb was “rustic” but we were prepared for that after being in Mexico for a month. This one was a little different because it was missing a wall and instead was open to a large balcony. We were a little concerned, but the bugs and geckos in our room didn’t really bother us. We really liked waking up and watching the birds every morning including some huge Mexican Chacalacas.
So the plan was to do nothing. We ended up hiking every trail in town. There are 2 waterfalls but it is the end of the dry season so they weren’t anything special. We just sat on our deck or swam at the beach every day. Just what we needed before heading back to Seattle and the rumored April snow and cold.
